Boating & launch ramps
Big Bear Lake is managed by the Big Bear Municipal Water District (BBMWD), which operates the East and West public launch ramps and issues the boat permits every vessel on the lake must display (see the live ramp hours on our homepage lake report). Boats are capped at 26 feet, and California's Boater Card is required to operate a motorized vessel. Speed limits step down close to shore and docks: 35 MPH is the lake-wide maximum, 10 MPH applies from sunset to 7:00 a.m., and 5 MPH applies near buoyed swim areas and the shoreline. Before you launch, check BBMWD's quagga-mussel inspection and Clean, Drain and Dry requirements — invasive-species screening is required at the ramp.
Fishing
Big Bear Lake is stocked with trout on a recurring schedule by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife — our live lake & fishing report tracks the current or next stocking window along with recent record catches (rainbow trout, brown trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish all turn up in BBMWD's records). Anglers 16 and older need a current California fishing license displayed while fishing, live bait is not permitted, and fishing is prohibited from the dam or any posted no-fishing area.

Beaches & swimming
Big Bear Lake doesn't have a large sandy public beach the way an ocean town does — swimming is permitted within 50 feet of shore, within a designated swim area, or within 20 feet of a private dock. There is no lifeguard on duty anywhere on the lake, so swim with a partner and treat every entry point as swim-at-your-own-risk. Scuba diving is prohibited lakewide, and boaters are asked to give posted swim areas a wide, slow berth.
